TANZANIA´S NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDLIFE
National Parks represent the highest level of resource protection available. By February 2008, TANAPA had expanded to 16 national parks and planned further growth. Conservation of ecosystems in these parks is the organization’s core focus.
Nature-based or wildlife tourism is the primary income source supporting park management and organizational mandates.
Tanzania’s national parks primarily serve conservation purposes, preserving the country’s natural heritage and providing safe breeding grounds for fauna and flora away from human interference.
The park system protects key biodiversity and World Heritage sites, addressing deforestation and urbanization. The creation of Saadani and Kitulo National Parks in 2002 extended protection to coastal and montane habitats.
TANAPA is acquiring more land to expand parks and enhance migration corridors.
Visiting Tanzania supports its investment in conservation. Over 46,348.9 square kilometers are dedicated to national parks, with over one-third of the country under some form of protection.
